That's really bad news for those poor people. We just went through this with Haiti and that quake was a 7.0. The people of Chile have just gone through heavy rains ans mudslides and now this huge quake.

CNN saying tsunami was generated!
Unbeievable that it took CNN one full hour to get it on the air. But they're on top of it now.

Re: Chile upgraded to 8.8 !!!
Lots of eqs in Ca after Chili. I have one kid in Japan and one at the beach in ore soI am waiting for the West Coast Ts center to clarify their position after the 4ft tsu. hit the Chili coast. I believe Hawaii is on alert but we have some hours before anything arrives. Aftershock just happened big but not clear at last look.
Unfortunately I took some melatonin so I would sleep and not worry about eqs. I almost did not catch it. Good night unless there is a stronger eq or west coast warning. My bag has been packed for a coupleof months.

I thought it was on the west side of Maui? Hilo side of the Big Island appears to be in the most danger but that's only historical data. Things change....
I just found out about it, and I'm starting at the top of the board and working down.

Re: Chile upgraded to 8.8 !!!
the condo is at Kihei on the beach- we are on the second floor. Hope nothing comes of this, but I've always felt uncomfortable with the location. It's on the west side, but there's serious southern exposure. Stay safe, Joy!

There are now 22 eq's total so far with aftershocks in the 6 range. Karin in OR got symptoms for this yesterday. She sent me an email hoping it wasn't for the PNW>

""anyone know how to store them safely?""
Where you can get at them after everything has colasped!
Looking at the old pictures of the 64 Alaska quake of the housing development no place would have been safe considering that the land that the houses were built on shifted rather badly.

Hilo had huge damage in 1960 from that 9.5 quake in Chile (the largest ever recorded), with 61 fatalities. I remember it so well having lived in Waikiki at the time. When the pics of the bent parking meters came in, it really struck home how deadly and powerful those tsunamis can be but at least they now have a warning system which will surely save many lives.
My daughter has close friends who have 2 condos on the windward side of Oahu, they're in Sweden now so not much they can do about it anyway. I'm just glad daughter isn't there. She was at this time last year!
Hope you are safe there Joy. Report back with any news you get about the tsunami please.
An article at the link about the damage from that monster quake in 1960.
