    "Brown pelicans, whose wave-skimming and dive-bombing for fish are familiar to people who spend time on the California coast, have been mysteriously falling ill and dying by the hundreds over the past few weeks."

    "ASTORIA, Ore. - All along the Oregon coast over the last month, hundreds of brown pelicans have turned up dead, starving or begging for food.

    As many as 1,000 of the gangly seabirds failed to make their annual fall migration to California, many instead winding up at Oregon's rehabilitation centers."

    Ever since we had that week of really bad rain, the pelicans have had some serious issues.

    Maybe it is due to all of the runoff that occurred. I know that down at Seal Beach in OC they had just tons of garbage that had washed up on shore, so you can only image what went down the washes that go out to the shoreline and into the ocean.

    Just checked in at Linsdomain for the meaning of the pelican totem.
    Perhaps they are sending us a message to stick together and to rise above the troubles.

    Pelican
    Buoyancy
    Unselfishness
    Pelican people can rise to the top no matter what life throws at them;
    no matter how weighed down they become with life’s trials and tribulations.
    Emotional turmoil is often the weight in a Pelican person’s life.
    Pelican teaches you how not to be overcome by your troubles,
    but rather to rise above them.

    Pelican shares nesting sites and food with others and
    therefore teaches unselfishness.
    Teamwork is key for a person with a Pelican totem.

    From yesterdays LA Times:

    Seems the big birds are doing better and beginning to fly off.
